SPECIALIZED PROVES AERO IS EVERYTHING WITH THEIR VERY OWN WIND TUNNEL

Picture
The only way to make aerodynamics not matter is to stop moving. That line basically sums up Specialized’s philosophy regarding aerodynamics from here forward. Aerodynamics are so important on a bike in fact, that Specialized has now invested a huge amount of time and money in creating their own bicycle specific wind tunnel – an industry first.

Aerodynamics is about more than TT bikes and aero road helmets. By utilizing their new wind tunnel, Specialized aims to improve aerodynamics for every bicycle along with components from here on out.

Mapei C59 Colnago

Picture
Colnago have taken a bold step towards the future of road bike evolution with the introduction of the C59 Disc. Now including the Mapei team colours from the 90's.Featuring fully hydraulic front and rear disc brakes it is set to bring a whole new level of performance and safety to the Colnago road bike line. The frame and fork are fully compatible with standard PM calipers too.

With twin 140mm diameter discs the frame and fork have also been redesigned in the key areas where the brakes are mounted. The fork is completely new, whilst at the rear of the main frame the chainstays and the seatstays are also new, to cope with the increased loading that the disc brakes generate at their mounting points. The C59 Disc is compatible with both electronic and mechanical groupsets.

Along with the main chassis changes, Colnago have also designed their own matching wheel system, the Artemis Disc. These wheels feature disc-specific hubs and full carbon composite wheel rims.

Now, no matter the weather, you can have the most powerful and controllable braking system available on a road bicycle. The system is easy to service, should it ever need servicing - as the system is essentially closed and there are no cables to replace or wear out. The regular maintenance will only consist of checking the brake pads for wear, and replacing them when needed - which is a simple five minute job.
Cyclespeed has a number of C59's on the floor for you to test ride and feel what a real handmade super bike feels like.

Giro d'Italia 2013

Picture
Well here we go again ...
The route of the 2013 Giro d'Italia has been officially presented in Milan, with race organisers balancing the traditionally mountainous route with 88.9km of time trials, in a clear attempt to attract big-name stage racers such as Bradley Wiggins and Ryder Hesjedal and Vincenzo Nibali.

The 96th edition of the Corsa Rosa will cover 3405km, starting in Naples with a 156km road race stage on Saturday May 4 and ending on Sunday May 26 in Brescia, with a final road stage and five laps of a city centre circuit. The average stage distance is down to 162.2km a day.

The route is finely balanced with seven mountain finishes but also a 17.4km team time trial on the island of Ischia on stage 2, a 55.5km individual time trial from Gabicce Mare to Saltara on stage 8 and a 19.4km mountain time trial on stage 18.

Disc Brakes on road up date:

Picture
The UCI say they will keep an open mind about the use of disc brakes in the professional road peloton, but said manufacturers need to provide performance data before the components can be properly considered for competitive use.

In the aftermath of SRAM’s announcement of disc brake options for their new Red 22 groupset, a test rider tweeting a photo of a comparable offering from Shimano, and Formula disc brakes said to be compatible with Campagnolo EPS shifters, the trend is inexorably moving towards disc brakes for road racing.

But Matthieu Mottet, technological coordinator at the UCI, told BikeRadarserious challenges need to be overcome before disc brakes could even be considered for use in UCI sanctioned pro races – and they start with the analysis of temperature, performance and crash test data.

“We’re thinking about disc brakes for future use, but for the moment we don’t have enough data about them,” he said, adding that the first stage would be analyses of the manufacturers’ performance figures. He said, however, that none of the road disc manufacturers had provided data yet.
I believe they have, from a good internal source.

He pointed out two additional safety considerations. Firstly, if some riders used discs and other used rims, the variation in braking performance would be dangerous inside a fast-moving peloton, potentially leading to even more crashes.
Isn't that call modulation and set up of the brakes...

It means that, if disc brakes were sanctioned, all the main manufacturers – Shimano, Campagnolo, SRAM and market newcomers such as TRP – would have to supply UCI accredited discs to the pro teams simultaneously.
More money for the UCI?

A second safety concern, Mottet pointed out, is heat buildup in the discs, which could lead to serious burns if the brakes touched riders in a crash.
Come on you have more of a chance of a chain ring going through your leg?

In the meantime, hydraulic rim brakes could fill the gap, offering better modulation but similar stopping power to cable brakes. The UCI’s only stipulation concerning hydraulic rim brakes is that the brake hood is not overly elongated to become a de facto handlebar extension giving an aerodynamic advantage.
More old school UCI rules that need to be updated into the 21st century, why don't we look at bike weights while we are at it ?? Standard carbon bike out of the box are under the UCI standards.

After riding the new SRAM disc's forget the stories that you are hearing about to powerful , disc fade etc etc .. these work and frecken well too.
Remember all the stories we heard about Di2 from Shimano, (it will never catch on, what happen when it get wet.. blah blah blah)  Well its here and it works, same with campag's EPS and soon to come SRAM's new electronic groupo.

For the UCI to agree with this, well its all about money for these guys. SRAM has tested this until they were RED in the face. Why would you put something like this in the market only to fail. Remember this wouldn't just be a small fail it would result in deaths, so their R&D would have be triple checked.

Back to the UCI, well its now SHOW ME THE MONEY boys... ch Ching

Also thoughts are how long before we see it on Tri bikes to replace these stupid V brakes that don't really work!

SRAM 22 , 11 speed

Picture
SRAM will go 11-speed with new SRAM Red 22 and Force 22 road groupsets, with hydraulic rim and hydraulic disc brakes as options for the top-end group. For those wanting to add hydraulic brakes to an existing 10-speed system, SRAM announced new S-700 hydraulic levers that can be paired to S-700 hydraulic rim or disc calipers and any 10-speed SRAM group.

DISC BRAKE TRIATHLON BIKE UNVEILED

Is this what is to come on triathlon bikes for the future
First public released disc brake tri bike. Just as aero just as light..

More to come ....

New Specialized SITERO released at Ironman Melbourne

Picture
Triathlon saddles are a strange bird. Built to somehow provide comfort for 180km's of sitting on the nose of your saddle while staying in the most aerodynamic position possible, tri saddles are quite different from those that you would find on a standard road bike. One of the biggest design debates for the tri market lately has been whether or not to include a nose on the saddle as illustrated by ISM’s popular seats. Specialized’ answer to that quandary arrives in the form of their new Sitero triathlon saddle – with a nose.

Designed with the intention of improving blood flow, reducing pressure, and opening the rider’s hip angle, the Sitero looks to be a solid addition to the Body Geometry line of saddles.
Stock should land mid april , but we have one in-store for you to touch and feel.

Specialized S-Works Road shoes - long-term review

Picture
Specialized wandered into dangerous territory this year, replacing its much-loved S-Works Road shoe for an entirely new model that's supposedly better suited to the company's professional racers. We've been riding a set since September 2012, and as long as you can wrap your head around the polarizing aesthetics you'll probably find it a worthy successor.

NEW SCHWALBE IRONMAN TRIATHLON TIRES

Picture
The new Schwalbe Ironman triathlon tire uses a few tricks to reduce drag, including a new compound, narrow width and long groove treads.

Much of the industry is touting the improved aerodynamics of slightly wider tires and rims, but Schwalbe’s saying wider tires aren’t necessarily the right answer with the deeper aero wheels typically found on triathlon bikes. The new Ironman tires are 22mm wide, the result of testing against everything from 20 to 25mm tires in the wind tunnel. From the press release:

“With a width of 22 millimetres, we have tuned the dimensions of the tyre perfectly to suit (triathlon)”, said Christian Lademann, Road/Triathlon Product Manager at Schwalbe. “This saves the athletes a great deal of energy. In the 180 kilometre (Ironman) cycling segment at a speed of around 40 km/h, riders need to produce an average of 300 watts. The new tyre dimensions reduce this by about 10 watts. This saves a whole three minutes in terms of time!”

Best TT Bikes For Triathlon: Specialized S-Works Shiv
When Craig ‘Crowie’ Alexander smashed the Hawaii course record in 2011, slashing an incredible 13 minutes from his best bike split, this is the bike he was riding. What’s more, that ride was with a slightly lower-than-PB average power, proving his advantage came from aerodynamics. At Cyclespeed we have S-Works Shiv in-store for you to test ride to feel the experience of a real Tri TT bike.
Specialized is not a brand that is trying to fit you on a road TT bike over the 90 to 180km distance....
Even saying this, the Specialized Shiv is a great all-round Tri bike for even the short course events, allowing the competitor to run off the bike with greater ease.

Win from Suzy @ the Woman's GP

WHY DISC BRAKE VS RIM BRAKE?

Picture
Safety first:
No rim damage (specially carbon clincher beat or glue on tubular), No pressure changes inside the tire (blow off the carbon clincher), Same braking performance in any condition, Less rotating inertia (rim weight saving, moved the mass toward the rotating axis), No weight penalty, Aerodynamic and clean looking on front side, Can run even on a non-straight rim (i.e. spoke failure), History of MTB already tells the way to go

Colnago’s disc brake features: higher pivoting, speed-lock available (internal routing), wide range of lever reach adjustment, finger clearance on top position (forefinger can hold the grip).

Bar Tape, the good the bad and the ugly..

Picture
Bar Tape is the perfect addition for any road or Tri bike. With a large variety of colours, there will be a sure match any colour scheme. Dirty or old bar tape can be more than just an eye saw on you're  bike. With sweat, food products & dirt mixed together , bar tape can be a perfect breeding ground for bacteria which can lead to important days off your training.
Here are a few infections which dirty bar tape can pass on to you.

E. coli: common causes are cramps, diarrhea, vomiting
Streptococcal bacteria: typically causes upper respiratory infection
Influenza (flu): a virus that causes an infection in the nose, throat and lungs

So don't be a stooge.. Bar tape is one contact point which needs to be kept clean think how many times you make contact with your face and your handle bars when out of the road....
Remember train smart.....

Specialized Purist bottles

Picture
In simple terms, Specialized goal was to have a bottle that is completely non-toxic, and doesn’t make your beverage taste like plastic, or the previous liquid that was in the bottle. How did they do it? Silicon dioxide. Not being an A-student in chemistry class, I’ll let Specialized explain it in their own words:

“Silicon dioxide is an inert compound made from two of the most abundant elements in the earth’s crust: silicon (not to be confused with the chemical “silicone”) and oxygen. When combined they form silicon dioxide (SIO2).

Occurring naturally in plant-based foods such as apples, oranges, cucumbers, and celery, silicon dioxide is an indispensable part of the food we eat. [It] is also found in nature as sand and quartz and is used in the production of glass beverage bottles and ceramics such as earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain. These properties make it an excellent barrier for a water bottle, providing a natural, safe shield, while delivering the pure taste only glass can offer.”

Science lessons aside, I found that the bottles really work as-advertised. In fact, they’ve become my go-to bottles for just about everything. Need to bring your breakfast to work after that 5:30 masters swim practice? Fill a Purist bottle with your milk (cow, soy, almond… or whatever ‘milk’ you drink), without fear of an everlasting stench if you accidentally leave the bottle in your car for a few days. Or fill them with sports drink for your next ride. Heck, fill a bottle with Grandma’s leftover gravy from your next holiday meal. I don’t care what you fill it with – and neither does the bottle.

SRAM RED HYDRAULIC DISC BRAKES ON DECK, SHIMANO NOT FAR BEHIND?

Picture
At this point, SRAM’s not even trying to hide their Red hydraulic disc brakes. BR spoke with their PR manager Michael Zellman and, while he wouldn’t give us a firm date for launch, we get the impression it’s soon enough but after the current season is over.

A couple weeks ago Wade from Cyclingtips had the opportunity to sit down for a chat with Dr. Andy Pruitt and Scott Holz who were visiting Australia from the US. Both are arguably two of the most renowned and respected authorities on bike-fit. We spoke to Andy Pruitt and Scott Holz about their experiences with positioning the pros and their philosophies with bike-fitting.
Andrew and myself were lucky enough to be part of the bike fitting experience while he was here in Australia.
